I was just wondering what you guys prefer using when you shoot. I hear a lot of people prefer widescreen, because it looks more "pro". What are your ideas on this?

The 'widescreen' format is a more aesthetically pleasing shape. It lends itself better to strong and dynamic composition - 4:3 is a visually boring and limiting format. Widescreen is also more of a natural shape - it's closer to the format our eyes use. That's why cinema adopted it 60-70 years ago - to stay ahead of the competition from TV. TV is now slowly catching up - broadcasters and TV maufacturers are adopting widescreen as the standard and soon the 4:3 format will be history.

That makes sense if you are shooting film. If you are shooting MiniDV, all it does is just cut off the top and bottom edge. Im talking about consumer cameras here. I am awear that semi-pro MiniDV cams have high resolution when shooting 16:9

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's okay - as long as you know this in advance you can frame your shots accordingly (using 16:9 guides or masking tape etc) and then crop or mask the footage in post.

Anyway - that's just me, I prefer widescreen, so that's what I do.
